Data Used in Table 5 -- Katz and Krueger (1992) The data used in Table 5 of Katz and Krueger (1992) are supplied in a file called TABLE5.DTA. The data are in STATA format. The exact variables used in Table 5 are on the file, as well as the underlying data from which the variables are derived. The variables are clearly labelled (see the descriptions below). The lpop variable is from the City and County Data Book. All the other variables are derived from the survey. As explained in footnote 9 of Katz and Krueger (1992), the wage variable equals the part-time wage if the restaurant employed part-time workers, and the full- time wage if the part-time wage was missing. The vast majority of restaurants paid the same starting wage to full- and part-time workers. A description of the data, summary statistics, and regression results for column 3 of Table 5 are provided below. (Note, to replicate the sample exactly it is necessary to restrict the sample to observations with non-missing wage data.)
