This directory contains an ascii file of data tn8992.dat and a sas program xstate.sas that reads the data and computes some of the cross-state regressions reported in tables 4.4 and 4.5 of Myth and Measurement. The log and listing created by the xstate.sas program are also included (xstate.log; xstate.lst) in order to check the means and display the raw data. The data are for 51 states, with information on teenage employment- population (1986-92), and overall employment-population and unemployment rates (1986-1992), all taken from Geographic Profiles of Unemployment and Employment. In addition, there are data for 1989 and 1992 on: -mean log wages of teens in the state (computed from CPS data) -fraction of teens earning below the minimum wage, at the minimum wage, and between the old and new minimum wages (computed from CPS data) -mean log wage of adult men in the state (computed from CPS data) -a variable representing the number of teens observed in the 1989 CPS merged annual file for the state (used as a weight) The labels in the sas program should be self-explanatory.
